Dr. Herman is a life member of the National Storytelling Network and was a member for over 22 years.
She founded the Mountain Top Storytelling Guild: tri-state Western Maryland region (MD, PA,
and WV).
She is a life member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NSN), the National
Association for Gifted Children, and the Oral History Mid-Atlantic Region. She is on the Board of Directors of the NSN YES
Alliance SIG and the Association for the Education of Gifted Underachieving Students, which encourages teachers to teach to
students’ strengths as well as weaknesses.

Dr. Herman has written stories, articles about storytelling, art, creative movement, and gifted students
in such magazines as Better Homes & Gardens; Parenting For High Potential; Teaching for High Potential;
The National Storytelling Journal; The Roeper Review; Teacher; Early Years; Gifted Child Today; and Art Teacher.
Chapters are found in the following books: Active Learning; Tales As Tools; Nurturing Gifts and
Talents of Primary Grade Students, and Telling Stories To Children published in 2005 by the National Storytelling
Network. Dr. Herman is a contributing author for the book The Storytelling Classroom: Application Across the Curriculum
published in 2006 by Libraries Unlimited.
Stories
Dr. Herman has published stories: “The Four Wise People” in an anthology called Spinning
Tales; Weaving Hope: published by New Society Publishers and “Juan Bobo and Sisi” in an anthology called
Joining In: Audience Participation Stories and How to Tell Them published by Yellow Moon Press. Presently she is working on a series called Mischievous Martha: True Tales from an Orphanage,
about her mother-in-law.
